It is
worthwhile to mention that Ramganga Dam Kalagarh, which
was second largest earthen dam in the Asia, was built by
the engineers and staff of the department, without any
assistant of contractors, in the scheduled time and the
same was appreciated by the then Hon’ble Prime Minister
of India Smt. Indira Gandhi. Chilla Hydroelectric
Project was also constructed by the department before
the scheduled time and all the projects constructed by
the department so far have been giving satisfactory
service in the hydropower generation.
In addition to construction and maintenance of
irrigation system, flood protection and drainage works,
to cater the power needs the state irrigation department
has also been planned a number of Hydro Power Projects
after independence . The
Irrigation Department is also responsible for
construction and maintenance of irrigation system, flood
protection and drainage works in the hilly regions. The
department has undertaken many flood control and soil
erosion measures in Garhwal and Kumaon Divisions. In
addition, avalanche resistant work in Badrinath; soil
erosion works in Kedarnath and Gangotri have also been undertaken,
to safeguard these holy places.
Yet
there is problem of flood control and soil erosion in
Udham Singh Nagar, Haridwar, Dehradun and few hill districts
of Uttaranchal. To solve these problems, proposals are
framed after intense
survey by Irrigation Department and presented before
the Technical
Advisory Committee for technical approval and later
sent to govt. for financial sanction.
