Hydro Power has to play a vital role in the development of newly created state of Uttarakhand. All other resources of the state viz. forest, herbs, orchard, agriculture, floriculture and tourism etc. taken together are not going to earn that much revenue what hydropower can give it alone. So, we have to focus our attention towards harnessing of hydropower in phased manner.

Hydro Power is cheap, clean, and free from pollution. It is renewable and requires negligible maintenance cost. That is why the developed nations of the world harnessed their Hydro power potential first. It is unfortunate that we gave least priority to Hydro power inspite of being bestowed with three major perennial river basins viz. Ganga, Yamuna, and Sarda. These rivers and their tributaries are snow fed and sufficient water is available in these rivers round the year. With high discharge and steep gradient, these rivers have immense Hydro power potential while flowing through Uttarakhand region.
